Additional Questions & Resources

General Questions

What is a Mohel?

A Mohel is a trained professional who specializes in performing circumcision, particularly in the Jewish tradition. Mohels often combine medical knowledge with spiritual sensitivity, making them uniquely qualified to perform circumcisions with precision and care. I have performed over 2,500 circumcisions across the U.S., Canada, and Israel.

How did circumcision begin?

Circumcision dates back over 3,500 years and is first mentioned in the Bible as a covenant between God and Abraham. It later spread to cultures across Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, often as a rite of passage, health practice, or spiritual symbol. Today, it is widely practiced around the world for both religious and medical reasons.

Is circumcision safe?

Yes. When performed by a trained professional under sterile conditions, circumcision is a safe and low-risk procedure. As an experienced Mohel, I ensure the utmost care before, during, and after the procedure to prioritize your baby’s safety and comfort.

When is circumcision typically performed?

For newborns, it’s ideally done between day 8 and 3 months of age. This timing minimizes trauma, supports natural healing, and avoids the complexity of general anesthesia required later in life.

Is circumcision painful for my baby?

With proper anesthesia and a gentle approach, most babies experience minimal pain. I use a local anesthetic and comfort techniques such as pacifiers and swaddling to reduce discomfort.

Circumcision Methods & Medical Info

Which circumcision method is best for babies?

The Mogen clamp, Plastibell device, and Gomco clamp are all safe and effective. I personally use the Mogen shield — the fastest, most gentle method when performed by a skilled Mohel. It minimizes bleeding and requires no strapping to a board.

Which circumcision method is least painful?

The Mogen technique is often considered least painful because it’s so fast. However, all methods are relatively pain-free when local anesthetics are used. Healing is typically swift and smooth.

Which circumcision method is safest?

All three main methods are safe when done properly. The Plastibell is popular among pediatricians, while the Mogen is preferred by many Mohels due to speed and minimal trauma. I use the Mogen clamp exclusively for its efficiency and gentleness.

How is circumcision done on babies?

Using the Mogen clamp, the foreskin is gently separated and removed with a surgical scalpel. The entire process takes just a few minutes, and your baby is in your arms almost immediately afterward.

Timing, Healing & Recovery

How soon after birth can my son be circumcised?

I typically perform circumcisions from day 8 onward, up to 3 months of age. Earlier procedures tend to be easier for both baby and parents.

When will the circumcision heal?

Healing usually takes 7–10 days. I provide detailed aftercare instructions and remain available for follow-up questions.

What are circumcision adhesions and when do they occur?

Adhesions are when the remaining foreskin sticks to the glans (head) of the penis. They can develop in the first few weeks post-procedure if the area isn’t cleaned properly. I’ll advise you on prevention and treatment.

Is it safe to delay circumcision until my son is older?

While circumcision can be done later, it becomes more invasive and may require general anesthesia. Infant circumcision is faster, simpler, and less stressful for both baby and parents.

Emotions, Comfort & Parental Concerns

Will circumcision hurt my baby?

With proper anesthesia and a gentle approach, the discomfort is minimal and brief. I use numbing cream and comfort techniques to keep your baby calm.

How can I comfort my baby after circumcision?

Holding, nursing, and swaddling your baby all help. You can also use infant Tylenol under guidance, and I’ll walk you through aftercare thoroughly.

What if I don’t want to be present during the procedure?

That’s completely fine. Some parents choose to be in the room, others step out. I’ll make sure your baby is safe, secure, and comforted either way.

Will my baby breastfeed normally afterward?

Yes. In fact, many babies nurse immediately after circumcision, which helps soothe them.

Religion, Culture & Ethics

Which religions practice circumcision?

Circumcision is central in Judaism (performed on the 8th day) and commonly practiced in Islam. Many Christians also choose circumcision for spiritual or health reasons. It’s also widely performed for non-religious, cultural, or medical reasons.

Is there a ceremony involved if we’re not Jewish?

Only if you want one. I offer personalized moments or prayers for families of all backgrounds, but the procedure can also be purely medical.

Do you perform Bris Milah (Brit Milah)?

Yes, for Jewish families, I offer the full traditional ceremony including blessings, naming, and explanations for guests.

Sexual Health & Misconceptions

Will circumcision increase penis size?

No, circumcision does not change the size of the penis. Some people think it appears larger afterward, but this is just due to the glans being exposed.

Will circumcision affect future sexual pleasure?

Research is mixed, but most studies show little to no difference. Some men report increased pleasure or hygiene benefits post-circumcision. Overall satisfaction is high.

Will circumcision help with premature ejaculation?

There’s no strong evidence that circumcision cures PE. However, some men report improved focus and control. PE is more often related to psychological or neurological factors.

Can circumcision cure balanitis?

In cases of recurrent balanitis linked to foreskin issues, circumcision can be curative. However, not all balanitis is caused by foreskin problems — a proper medical evaluation is essential.

Parent Logistics

Is it too early to think about circumcision during pregnancy?

Not at all. Once you know it’s a boy, it’s a great time to reach out so we can plan together.

How long does the circumcision take?

The procedure itself usually takes under 2 minutes. With prep and post-care, I’m typically in and out of your home in under 30–45 minutes.

What do I need to prepare?

You’ll need 3 swaddle blankets, wipes, diapers, and optionally grape juice. I provide all medical supplies.

Can the circumcision be done in a special location?

Yes. I primarily perform circumcisions in homes, but I can also come to synagogues, catering halls, or other comfortable settings.

How can I reach you with questions?

You can call, text, or email me anytime before or after the procedure. I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
